We were introduced to the Herdmans in chapter 1. What has changed from the beginning of the book to the end, the Herdmans or everyone elses’ opinions about the Herdmans? Why?

The Herdmans have created a lot of trouble since they joined the Christmas pageant, but Mother was determined that the pageant would go on. If you were in charge of the pageant, would you still be determined that it go on, not knowing what trouble the Herdmans would cause next? Why or Why not?

How is the way Imogene plays Mary different that how you think Alice Wendleken would play Mary?

What would be a good title for chapter 4?

Page 35 – Alice’s mother told the Ladies’ Aid that it was sacrilegious to let Imogene Herdman be Mary.

What do you think sacrilegious means? Why do you think Alice’s mother says this?

Page 36 – Some people said it wasn’t fair for a whole family who didn’t even go to our church to barge in and take over the pageant.

What do you you think barge mean? Have you heard it used before? When?

Mother says, “I’m going to make this the best Christmas pageant ever!”  What do you think she says this.

You may be able to think of some words to describe the Herdmans. The words would think of may not be good words to say about them. Is there something good you could say about the Herdmans?
